More Friends for the Fire is now available for purchase on iTunes. There is a nice little write-up of the EP on the ALARM Press website. I've taken down the previous posting of Stores 17 from the limited edition version of the Anhedonia EP, but don't fret I will soon be posting a handfull of songs on the new Portland-based music blog Always on the Brink so keep an eye out for that. In the meantime I hope you enjoy More Friends For The Fire.

More Friends for the Fire now has an official release date: April 1st (no joke). I will be posting the complete artwork (by Justin Gorman) as a free, downloadable PDF here at Gouseion.com and I'm sure it will be made available at Runriotrecords.com as well. I am also posting below another unmastered track from the as yet unreleased limited version of the Anhedonia EP. This time it is a track titled Stores 17, track 9 for those of you keeping track. Also, in the spirit of limited nature of said release I am simultaneously taking down Chamber Phobia, track 8, included in the previous post. In other news I've started work on my 3rd full-length, stay tuned for updates on that.

More Friends for the Fire is now in the hands of distributers, I am expecting it to be available the second half of March. I've fielded a few questions recently about the limited edition of Anhedonia; as of now it is not available, but I may offer it through Gouseion.com in the future, but as a form of expiation/pacification I'm posting an unmastered version of Chamber Phobia for free download. I am also including a link to the Runriot site where I have posted another b-side, this time from Nijikon, called Victoria. In other news I am in talks to release my more experimental electronic pseudonymous music through a label based here in Portland, more on this as it develops.

The artwork for More Friends for the Fire is done thanks to the talented Justin Gorman. Unfortunately the release date has been delayed and we are now expecting it to be available sometime in March. In other news Graham Barey of the Portland Mercury was nice enough to write an article about yours truly, you can find it here: Gouseion: Big in Japan, or you can check the excerpt down in the press section. One more bit of news, possibly a little late for those who don't already know, i'm playing a free show tomorrow evening (10PM) at Dunes with resident DJs Honey Dripper and Rainbow Pudding. I'll also be doing a short DJ Dilithium Crystal Meth set offering up some tasty space synth treats.
Also, not exactly Gouseion news, but i just have to say Ableton Live 8 / MAX for Live are going to be lot's of fun.

Mixtape Vol. 5, my first made with Ableton Live, is now available for download. I'm doing something a little different for the bonus track this time around, Digitalism, Kitsuné's hipster darlings, are running a remix competition so i did a rock'd-up version of their song "Taken Away" from their forthcoming LP. The remix is currently only available for your listening (not downloading pleasure) on my myspace page. I may do another remix that you can take away with you in the near future.

I'm told, while it is not available as of this posting, Nijikon's release is right around the corner. In other news I've just finished Mixtape Vol. V, keep an eye out, I'll be posting it here soon and it will also be available on the Runriot site. Also be on the lookout for the completely new face of Gouseion.com, I'm nearly finished with a complete overhaul of this site using the Drupal open source CMS, I am very excited about this new look and functionality for the site. I hope to launch the new site before the new year.

Sorry for the lack of upadtes the last couple months. As you may have guessed the release of Nijikon has been pushed back again and I am currently told it will come out the begining of November. I've started working on the, long overdue, next installment in the mixtape series which I'll hopefully have done by the time Nijikon is out to coincide with it's release.
|
It's time to take it back to 2004, sort of. Kitimat and I have recently finished respective reinterpretations of Britney Spears' 2004 hit Toxic. Both remixes will be available soon on the newly redesigned Runriot site. In other news Nijikon is slated for release on September 1st and I have shut down the Gouseion blog for the time being, I hope to resurrect it locally hosted here at Gousein.com. Also I recently lost my glasses while DJing at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Lodge as DJ Dilithium Crystal for a Bangerism event on the 11th, if anyone ended up with them please hit me up on myspace. Thanks.

Nijikon, the next Gouseion full-length, is done and is currently being mastered. The album should be available sometime in the next couple months on iTunes and other online music reailers. I have posted an accompanying pdf booklet under the Nijikon entry in the discography section for free download. I am currently working on promotional remixes for the newly redesigned Runriot site and am plotting the fifth installment of the Gouseion mixtape series.

Last week, in prep for this Wednesday’s profile in WW, I had a pretty extensive e-chat with Cassidy DeMarco, the rather furry dude behind the stuttering, synth swirl of hip-hop, IDM and plain ole’ techno that is Gouseion. As often happens, it bore more fruit than I could possibly jam into 350 words, so I leave it for you here. Read on for a conversation (so far as email can be called a “conversation”) that went from semiotics to Tokyo to Candlebox with nary a blink…
How did you get into music?
Well, my mom was a music major in college and used to play the guitar and flute and stuff when I was a kid so I think that had a lot to do with it. As far as making music, my dad was getting a degree in computer science as i was growing up, so we always had a computer around. I used to play games and shit on it, but I also messed around with this program called “mac-music” or something, really rudimentary, that was basically blank sheet music and you drag notes onto the sheet. I would sit there and mess with it for hours. I also played a little piano and stuff as a kid, but I always felt more connected to making music on a computer. It looked, sounded, felt more like a video game.
How do you think the Portland electronic music scene, specifically, has influenced your music?
Well, it’s funny because I don’t really feel like a part of the Portland electronic music scene. Most people I know are part of the hip-hop scene and I only have peripheral contact with other electronic musicians from Portland. I did the laptop lounge thing for a little while as Monodec, but even that was intermittent. As for the Portland electronic scene influencing my music, I don’t know that it has all that much. I’ve always felt like the overall Portland electronic scene and me were about fundamentally different things, but I’ve never been all that comfortable in groups. Still, there are people who have influenced me on an individual level, Audiocrip constantly blows me away, Tan’t of course, Jung Bo Seul…

"Gouseion's drums have been called "hard as fuck." And it's true—they really are. But they also transcend mere profanity to reach peaks most producers can only dream of. I am here to tell you that Gouseion's drums are as hard as the mighty hammer of Thor, Mjöllnir, and there are times on his new album, Nijikon, that they make sounds akin to that legendary weapon fiercely banging a sheet of slate in a thunderstorm. Gouseion—or Cassidy DeMarco, or Casio, or Casiocity, as he has been known variously over the years—is likely Portland's best, if least-known, producer actively releasing records. Years ago DeMarco began making a name in the Portland beat scene producing for the now-defunct hiphop duo Brokaw. While the union between emcee Colin Jones and DeMarco never managed to birth an LP, it did cement the idea in the consciousness of many listeners that DeMarco is a truly gifted beatsmith... In 2007 he signed with Run Riot Records on the strength of his previous work, releasing the classic Puisne—which is start to finish, the equal of any electronic release Portland has ever seen. While it received good reviews in various press outlets (including XLR8), Puisne did not garner DeMarco the attention or status of some other area artists. "Musically I think the album was a success, but financially it wasn't," says DeMarco. This is unfortunate, because the speedy sound of it takes NES electronica to new heights of intensity and prowess. It's like listening to the soundtrack of Mega Man 2 on coke while stabbing your most-hated enemy with a lightsaber. His newest release, the digital-only Nijikon, continues where Puisne left off, combining ferocious synths with drums; all the while layering them over somber keyboards that add pathos to their intensity."

"Some artists stand out in Portland that can make one think, 'I can’t believe this cat lives here!' Gouseion is one of those artists. Seriously, I can now be proud of our hipster city for not sucking on the IDM tip. This dude brings production precision the way any Warp Records artist would. With his new release entitled Puisne, each track is chalk full of discordant melodies wrapped in glitched out beats. But even with all the techno wizardry Gouseion displays, the sum is still greater then Puisne’s parts. Gouseion’s dramatic static cling percussion is brought forth in a constantly changing jiggafied bounce, keeping everything chaotically intact and the listener confident that a pro is at the wheel. Not once do you feel that Gouseion is demonstrating his editing skills for lack of feeling since every track hints at a stronger emotional charge with a reflective quality one cannot fake."

"cassidy demarco also known as gouseion perfectly blends stomping distorted drums and chunky synths with a melancholic 8-bit electronica vibe, leaving us with 'puisne', one of the most interesting albums i have heard in a while, recently released on run riot records. an absolute must-have are the three gouseion mixtapes where he mixes r&b divas and thugged out vocals with his trademark sound. asked for influences, he named mega man sound designers yuukichan's papa, matt rowe, yasutaka nakata, com.a, oku hanako, the matrix, hello! project, ove-naxx and dat politics (yeah, finally a band that i have already heard of). in order to get all of you excited as well: most of the time, gouseion made me think of modeselektor on crack."

"Let’s face it, the 'mashup' microgenre—which creates new songs from samples of seemingly mismatched others—exploded to 10 times the size anyone expected it to thanks to Girl Talk’s now-worshiped mashup album, Night Ripper. The snark masters at music-insider website Idolator even ran an Onion-esque 'obituary' for the genre in June ('The mash-up died yesterday. It was 5 years old.'). So, it’s all the more notable that the three (and counting) 'mixtapes' released by Cassidy DeMarco, a.k.a. Gouseion, are shit-hot and still totally relevant. It helps that said releases (untitled, save for the Mixtape, Vol. heading) don’t fall back on the obvious indie-rock-versus-rap ironies that launched Night Ripper (and its followers) into the stratosphere of hipster/geek appeal. Perhaps DeMarco lost interest after spending a few formative years recording indie rock as C++, but more likely he just knows the gimmick’s worn. Gouseion’s tapes, rather, are small works of wonder that romance the latter-day descendants of the gangsta rap the 28-year-old grew up with (NWA, 2 Live Crew) with modern soul classics—he even pulls off a Michael Jackson splice without it sounding clichéd. He tops the mix off with his own particular flavor for crushing analog synth and stuttering, heart-attack beats. It’s that flavor that, in the end, saves the tapes from the mashup grave. And it can be found in its naked, sample-stripped techno form on DeMarco’s proper debut, last month’s Puisne. DeMarco (who recently spent a year in Tokyo) says 'gouseion' is the Romanization of the Japanese word for “synthetic sound,” and Puisne’s 8-bit style stands out like a cell phone ring in church. But where similar artists tend to bathe their tones in melancholic blue, DeMarco imbues his with blistering red: Gangsta rap and breakbeats are just as lodged in his brain as Aphex Twin’s benchmark Analord series. And it makes sense: 'Making hip-hop and playing as Brokaw [his hip-hop duo with Disscompany boss Colin Jones] really pushed me to start playing out and promoting my own shit,' explains DeMarco. Add his 'undying love for IDM and noise shit' (he performs noise music solo as Minijack) to the mix, and Gouseion comes out on top. Yes, that’s an absurd number of music projects for a decade of recording—not to mention that Puisne and all three mixtapes came out this year. But that’s exactly why it’s so awesome to think of the force DeMarco will be in another 10."

5.X.07 XLR8R REVIEW (KID KAMELEON) >> LINK

"...Run Riot is starting up with a superb release Puisne from Gouseion. His tunes hit me out of nowhere, all chunky synth hopped up on super skitter mode. Like Funckarma and Modeselektor getting in a fight in a bouncy castle, but with the wistful edge you get from so many American Northwest producers. It didn’t hurt that Gouseion’s done a superb mashup of Too $hort “Blow the Whistle”. Check mixtapes and more at gouseion.com"

"You may not have heard of Gouseion, and for good reason, it’s just another pseudo-name being utilized by Cassidy DeMarco for his electro-flavored album, Puisne. Making original music since the age of eight, his 20 years of experience have dragged him though many genres of music, he’s released two indie rock albums under the name C++, hip-hop jams under the name Brokaw, and breakcore material under the name Minijack, and now as Gouseion, his new alias should be tip of everyone on the dance floor’s tongue."

7.18.07 WEEK LOCAL CUT (MICHAEL BYRNE) >> LINK
|
"As far as breakout techno musicians go around these parts, Gouseion’s (Cassidy DeMarco) a more than worthy successor to the Copy throne. The cuts off this debut have both a melodic immediacy and seriously interesting, complex layering. It makes for something bound to lure scene outsiders and electronic heads alike to the same claustrophobic, intensely possessive world of grubby analog tones and heart-attack bass stutters. This track adds a sliced-up vocal sample (a deep voice cut into nths), coloring the whole thing kinda ominous: more of a sense of threat than Copy’s sense of melancholy. It’s good stuff, nay, great stuff. DeMarco’s at the top of my list of people to watch in Portland techno musics."

"[HEAVY GLITCH] Self-proclaimed "digital gangsta'" Gouseion (a.k.a. Cassidy DeMarco) has about the most disappointing stage presence you'll see, even in the techno realm. But it's still noticeable for about five seconds: The glitchy, stuttering, hip-hop infused analog heart attack of DeMarco's densely packed, heavy-as-fuck laptop techno is total possession. DeMarco's still waiting for his moment in Portland's electronic sun. Soon. Very soon."
